  17. * required reading: http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file
  18. * README/IMPORTANT:
  19. <font color=#ff3333>End users of this list/file are expected to know what they are doing. These are the author's
  20. settings. The author does NOT expect (or indeed want) end users to just run with it as is.
  21. Use it as a comprehensive list, or as a template for your own.</font> Extensive links and comments
  22. have been added to help. Before using this user.js, if necessary, you should change, remove or
  23. comment out with two forward slashes any preferences you're not happy with or not sure about.
  24. The settings in this file (user.js) OVERWRITE the ones in your prefs (prefs.js - these are
  25. accessed via about:config) when FF is started. See the required reading above.
  26. * BACKUP FIRST:
  27. Backup your profile first, or even just the PREFS.JS. Go to your profile directory and copy
  28. prefs.js, rename it (eg to prefs.js.backup). That way, if you have problems, to restore FF
  29. to the state it was in beforehand, close FF, delete the prefs.js, rename your backup copy of
  30. prefs back to prefs.js, RENAME the user.js so it doesn't overwrite everything again, then
  31. start FF. IF you have any problems, you can also ask in the comments at ghacks.
  32. * PURPOSE:
  33. This is not a "comprehensive" list of ALL things privacy/security (otherwise it would be huge)
  34. It is more like a list of settings that generally differ from their defaults, and is aimed at
  35. improving security and privacy, at making a "quieter" FF, and at reducing fingerprinting and
  36. tracking, while allowing functionality. There will be trade-offs and conflicts between these.
  37. * COMMON ISSUES:
  38. Some prefs will break some sites (it's inevitable). If you are having issues search for
  39. "WARNING:" in this document, especially the ones listed just below.
  40. <font color=#ff3333>This user.js uses the author's settings, so you need to check these EACH release because
  41. the author prefers anonymity, security, and privacy over functionality [eg being able to
  42. paste in Facebook, downloadable fonts, and other minor inconveniences]. You have been warned.</font>
  43. 0202 & 0204 & 0207 & 0208: search, language and locale settings
  44. 0903 & 0904: master password (author set his up to last 5 minutes, default is once per session)
  45. 1007 & 1008: disabling/reducing session store saves affects recently closed tabs history
  46. 1204: security.ssl.require_safe_negotiation
  47. 1206: security.OCSP.require
  48. 1208: security.cert_pinning.enforcement_level
  49. 1209: TLS min and max
  50. 1210: disable 1024-DH Encryption
  51. 1211: disable SHA-1
  52. 1212: disable SSL session tracking
  53. 1401 & 1406: browser.display.use_document_fonts <font color=#ff3333>[author blocked fonts]</font>
  54. 1404: default fonts <font color=#ff3333>[author changed default fonts]</font>
  55. 1805: plugin.scan.plid.all <font color=#ff3333>[author blocked all plugins]</font>
  56. 1807: disable auto-play of HTML5 media (may break some sites' playback)
  57. 2025: enable/disable media types <font color=#ff3333>[author's settings, choose your own]</font>
  58. 2201: dom.event.contextmenu.enabled
  59. 2300's: workers/service.workers/push notifications etc may affect twitter, street view and other sites
  60. 2402: dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled
  61. 2404: dom.indexedDB.enabled <font color=#ff3333>[author killed indexedDB]</font>
  62. 2415b: limit popup events
  63. 2421: two JS preferences that cause the odd issue (commented out, not worth the performance loss)
  64. 2507: keyboard fingerprinting (android + physical keyboard)
  65. 2508: hardware acceleration (performance vs lots of video, also fonts render differently)
  66. <font color=#ff3333>[author killed hardware acceleration]</font>
  67. 2509: dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled (you will want to change this if you use touch)
  68. 2619: network.http.redirection-limit
  69. 2627: various User Agent and navigator objects
  70. 2662: browser.download.forbid_open_with
  71. 2668: lock down allowed extension directories - breaks add-ons that do not use the default XPI dir
  72. 2671: disable SVG
  73. 2698: privacy.firstparty.isolate
  74. 2705: dom.storage.enabled

  264. both very good features provided by Mozilla. They do rely on third parties: Google for
  265. safebrowsing and Disconnect for tracking protection (someone has to provide the information).

1543. A massive thank you to all the developers and online communities who provide and maintain these.
1544. Sometimes preferences alone are not enough. Here is a list of some essential addons for security,
1545. privacy, and fingerprinting protection. This is not a debate, it's just a list covering JS, XSS,
1546. AdBlocking, cookies, DOM Storage, UTM, redirects, and other items. Some are global, others allow
1547. granular control. While I believe most of these are the very best of the best, this can be subjective
1548. depending on your needs. Some of these may become obsolete with upcoming FF changes (canvas,
1549. resource://URI), some of these are debatable (should we UA spoof?), some I'm still looking for
1550. a better solution, and some I do not use but they will suit a lot of users.
